The Honda Diesel Range is the cleanest and safest ever
How clean are Honda’s latest Diesel engines?
Every diesel engine in the 2017 Honda range is of a Euro 6 standard, this means they are the cleanest and safest ever. These engines will not face charges anywhere in Britain under the Government’s Clean Air Zone proposals. In recent months, older Diesel cars have come under scrutiny from the UK Government (and mainstream press) for the level of harmful emissions that they produce. The Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) are campaigning to ensure that the differences between the varying compliance standards of used diesel cars are clear. This will help to ensure that customers are better informed about which cars comply with the latest emissions standards, and are therefore cleaner than their predecessors. Honda is in full support of the objectives of the SMMT to raise awareness and dierentiate between older diesel models and the newer, cleaner models. With all current Diesel Hondas being Euro 6 compliant, no new Diesel Honda customer will be penalised for their choice of powertrain. We are confident that for many customers, diesel remains the best proposition.
What is a Euro 6 engine?
Euro 6 is the sixth incarnation of the European Union directive to reduce harmful pollutants from vehicle exhausts. The standard was introduced in September 2015, and all mass-produced cars sold from this date must meet these emission requirements. The aim of Euro 6 is to reduce harmful exhaust emissions, including nitrogen oxide (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (THC and NMHC) and particulate matter (PM), which is basically soot from diesel cars. Reducing these pollutants can also mean improved fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. As you can see from the table below, diesel engines have come a long way in the last 15+ years, Euro6 engines produce just 80mg of NOx, comparing to 500mg back in 2001.
|Euro Standard||Date Effective||Carbon Monoxide (g/km)||NOx (g/km)||Particulate Matter (g/km)|
|Euro 1||Dec 1992||2.72||-||0.14|
|Euro 2||Jan 1997||1.0||-||0.08|
|Euro 3||Jan 2001||0.66||0.50||0.05|
|Euro 4||Jan 2006||0.5||0.25||0.025|
|Euro 5a||Jan 2011||0.5||0.180||0.005|
|Euro 6||Sept 2015||0.5||0.080||0.005|
Earth Dreams Technology
All Honda diesel engines in the 2017 range feature Earth Dreams Technology, a next generation set of technological advancements which greatly enhance both driving performance and fuel efficiency at a high level, using it as its base advanced environmental technologies to pursue the joy of driving unique to Honda. It is a series of measures in which efficiency of internal combustion components include engine and transmission. Honda’s diesel engine of choice is the 1.6 i-DTEC which has been specifically designed for the European market, to meet growing customer demand for low emission diesel engines. It is produced at Honda European manufacturing facility in Swindon, UK, on a purpose-built diesel production line, capable of producing 500 diesel engines in 1 day.
